Preparation for your kind of work

Practical details worth bringing forward.

Life and work changes can affect the return

Military and government households may have employee income, withholding questions, changing assignments, relocation-related records, benefits, retirement information, or multi-state circumstances to organize for tax preparation.

Prepare a clear household picture

Gather income documents, prior-year information, household changes, and records connected to the circumstances of the year. If a question involves travel, relocation, benefits, or income from more than one state, bring it forward early.

Separate work income from independent work

Employee income, independent Schedule C activity, and a separately taxed business entity are not the same thing. Identifying every type of income and filing requirement helps keep the preparation path accurate and understandable.

Every return starts with the income, records, and circumstances that apply to the client. If you also earn income through independent work, that activity may belong on Schedule C within the individual return. A separately taxed entity, however, requires its own filing process.
